Every family sooner or later faces the possibility of moving. And while most of the time it’s a good and exciting thing, move to a new home can be very stressful for your kids, who have no say in the process, or might not understand what is happening. Check out our tips for moving with kids, and turn your move into a fun adventure for your little ones.
First steps of moving
Above all, don’t underestimate your kids – they are highly intuitive and can sense that something big is coming. Whether it’s a long distance move, next city or simply down the block move – it is all a big change for kids. So take your time preparing them. Sit them down and tell them that you are planning to move, and why. Highlight the positive sides – a new house or an apartment, new neighborhood and new friends. Discuss as a family how will you celebrate the move.
Little helpers
Include the kids in the packing process. You will be surprised how effective kids are when it comes to labeling the moving boxes for you. All you need is a box of colored markers, multi-colored post-its, and some fun stickers. Make up a scheme – all the kitchen boxes may be labeled with green markers, have green post-its, and animal stickers on them. Living room things can have pink colors, and so on. Decorating the boxes will keep your kids occupied, and feel included.
Also, make sure to ask your kid to pack his own ‘important things’ box. Let your little one decide what toys, books, art and craft thing will go in it. Don’t forget to keep this box in your own car on the move day, as opposed to the moving truck. This might keep the kids busy in the car, and in the new home for the first few hours.
On the big moving day
When your best moving company drivers show up on the day of the move, be sure to introduce your kids to them, show your kid the moving trucks, and explain how will the move go. We provide the best moving service in NYC, and this includes making your kid happy – our movers are very friendly, and will gladly have a talk with your little one.
After the move
As much as you try to minimize the stress of moving, it is still a significant change for your kids. So after the moving day, don’t rush them into unpacking every last box and settling in the new room. Take your time exploring the neighborhood, letting your kid find new favorite ice cream place, toy store, or a book shop. Have a little housewarming party, and only then encourage your kids to unpack their belongings and decorate their rooms.
You might ask your kids to help you, unpack some common household things unless your movers have already done that.
Relocating to a new home can definitely be challenging and full of stress, but it can as well bring some good things to your family. Going through it as a team, and using our tips for moving with kids, your family will grow closer together and will make your moving day fun.
